Maori language week

Last week was Maori language week. Room 12 learnt lots of things from Maori language week like:
  1. Mahunga- Head
  2. Pakihiwi- Shoulders
  3. Poku- Stomach
  4. Wae wae- Legs
Then for the facials:

  1. Taringa- Ears
  2. Karu- Eyes
  3. Ihu- Nose
  4. Waha- Mouth
Now, in case you haven't noticed, these are actually the lyrics to a Maori body song. It goes like this:

Mahunga, Paikihiwi, Poku, Hope Wae wae
Mahunga, Paikihiwi, Poku, Hope Wae wae
Mahunga, Paikihiwi, Poku, Hope Wae wae

Taringa, Karu, Ihu, Waha e

(Note: Point to the body parts as you say the words)

In these photos, you can see we are teaching
Room 5 the body song. The name of the student I am teaching with 'Charlene' is long lost in my mind but I do know that we taught this class as well as Room 4. We had lots of fun and in the end me and Kayla ended up teaching the children again!

  1. Hey Chayse,
Great job at the auditions call backs today you did really well.I'm so happy for you as you are the only year five and the only boy. Hope you have fun at practises that come up and have fun playing your character at production on the real night.

  2. Hi Chayse
I know that your buddy in room 5 loved learning the body song with you and Charlene. Can you name any other body parts in Maori such as fingers or teeth?

  3. Very cool Chayse, Im glad you remembered the Upoko (Mahunga) pakahiwi waiata. Ive put Upoko here as once upon a time thats what word the kids used to use (including me when I was your age) in days past :-) Good on you with your buddy work, I wonder if you know what the Maaori word is for "tongue"? love Mumma

  6. Hello Charlie. (Huh. Your name reminds me of Willy Wonkas chocolate factory. Wish I lived there...)
Thanks, It was also fun teaching the junior classes (or grade 1 and 2 classes) and we had a good time.
Question; what school are you from and where do you (charlie, not me) live???
